Daca acum 2 ani Berlinul avea 3 aeroporturi : Tegel, Schönefeld si Tempelhof, ultimul a fost inchis acum 2 ani (considerat de autoritati prea inauntrul orasului), iar soarta Tegelului este si ea pecetluita se pare in favoarea viitorului BBI dezvoltat pe baza pistelor actualului Schönefeld, dar cu un nou terminal.

Managers overseeing the new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport are preparing to examine the implications of a technical partner's bankruptcy, as well as tighter security requirements, on the planned opening date for the hub.

Project co-ordinator WSP CBP has formally told the Berlin airports operator, Berliner Flughafen, on 19 May that the insolvency of Mulheim-based engineering firm IGK-IGR in February poses a threat to the development schedule.

Mulheim-based IGK-IGR had been responsible for technical building services planning within the terminal building architecture consortium PG BBI.

Although the consortium has assured Berliner Flughafen - on the same day as WSP CBP's warning - that the loss of IGK-IGR would not compromise the schedule and the October 2011 opening date, the contradictory statements have generated concern enough for Berliner Flughafen to commission an immediate report on the situation.

The matter has been further complicated by newly-introduced European Union security regulations which will require larger passenger-screening systems by April 2013.

While neither issue was considered "time-critical" when initially discussed in March, says Berliner Flughafen, a federal law enforcement projection received on 25 May indicated that the security-screening area at Berlin Brandenburg would need to be twice the current planned size.

"This will create considerable space problems at the screening gates and will have a significant impact on the configuration of the [Brandenburg Airport] terminal," says the airport operator.

Berliner Flughafen says that this development will also be covered in the report. The operator is "seeking solutions that are in line with the project's timeframe and budget" and its supervisory board aims to make a decision on 25 June.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport is being built on the site of Berlin Schonefeld and will replace the main Tegel and now-closed Tempelhof airports.

Opening of Berlin's new Brandenburg International Airport is being pushed back by seven months, to June 2012, in order to ensure its security facilities comply with new European Union requirements.

Operator Berliner Flughafen has opted to construct two new security-screening pavilions, and cut back the initial number of security lines, to meet the new timetable.

While the changes will require additional investment of €50 million ($61 million) to cover the new work, and the delay will mean a €26 million income shortfall, the operator says that budgetary "reallocations" and use of reserves mean the original funding requirement will "remain unchanged".

The opening for the airport - built on the Berlin Schonefeld site and intended to be a single hub for the German capital - had originally been scheduled for October 2011.

But the airport's planners determined that the new EU regulations, requiring liquid-scanners at security checkpoints from April 2013, meant the central terminal building would not be large enough, and needed redesigning.

Berliner Flughafen held a meeting today to decide whether to keep to the original schedule - and modify the terminal afterwards - or postpone the opening.

It says that it has opted to push back the opening date to 3 June 2012 because maintaining the timetable was "too risky". The bankruptcy of one of the terminal planning partners earlier this year contributed to this assessment, and the decision to postpone.

While the original Brandenburg International Airport terminal plan included 36 security lines, work on these "has been stopped", says the airport operator. Instead the terminal will have 32 security lines in an amended configuration, while the other four will be put in place by April 2013.

Berliner Flughafen supervisory board chairman Klaus Wowereit says the postponement and adjustment to the plan is a "good compromise" which balances the need for a quick opening with the need for forward planning.

"In comparable projects delays lasting years are the norm, as are exploding costs," says Wowereit. "We are far removed from encountering such obstacles."

Additional investment for the modification will be "fully covered" by the current funding programme, the operator insists.

"I believe that today's decision makes supreme sense, both in planning and economic terms," adds Berliner Flughafen chief Rainer Schwarz. "With the new opening date we will not need to turn away traffic, and with the building solution reached today we remain securely within the existing budget."

Berliner Flughafen adds that, if required, the redesigned security area will also be able to accommodate full-body scanners.

Aeroportul se va numi Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt in final si nu va avea initialele BBI (luate deja de Biju Patnaik Airport - India). Initialele lui vor fi BER.

Deschiderea BER se amana cu inca "cateva saptamani", nefiind gata echipamentele pompierilor si alte facilitati. Rusinos totusi pentru o tara ca Germania.

In mod normal trebuie sa aterizez acolo in toamna...daca pana atunci nu se duce nimeni, voi posta impresii.

Inaugurarea noului aeroport a fost amanata pana in martie 2013.

Directorul tehnic al proiectului a fost concediat, contractul cu firma responsabila de proiect a fost anulat.

Se prea poate ca termenul de martie 2013 sa nu fie cel mai exact si sa se mai intarzie un pic, nestiindu-se exact luna in care se va inaugura.

Se mai amana inca o data. In loc de octombrie 2013 se pare ca va fi deschis in inceputul lui 2014. Responsabil se pare ca este acelasi sistem de protectie incendiu.
