Host airline Lufthansa will be high profile in the Berlin area this week as it takes centre stage at the city's aviation festival with its latest acquisition.

The airline's first Airbus A380 makes its public debut at the ILA show on Tuesday and while the graceful flypasts will be wowing the hundreds of thousands of spectators expected to attend the Berlin-Schönefeld event, it will be the reaction to the interior of the aircraft that chairman and chief executive Wolfgang Mayrhuber will be most interested in.

The German carrier has involved its customers throughout the design phase of the three-cabin interior and many will get the chance to see the finished-article over the next few days. It is configured to take just 526 seats rather than the anticipated 550.

Mayrhuber says, "We have developed many technical solutions for the cabin design and furnishings which are being given a world premiere in this aircraft. Our innovations in terms of cabin air, light systems and inflight entertainment make our A380 unique."

The main focus for customers will be on an entirely new First Class cabin with eight seats on the upper deck reflecting the concept of individuality

A concept with separate cabins was deliberately rejected when customers involved in the development expressed a clear preference for an open-plan design. But the end result is a flexible privacy screen, allowing customers to determine the degree of individual privacy they desire.

Mayrhuber says that at the outset, customer experiences and wishes were integrated into the design. A quiet atmosphere was one of the most important needs. So sound-absorbing curtains partition off the rest of the cabin, while special sound-insulating material in the aircraft's outer skin and sound-absorbing carpeting block footstep noise to deliver what Lufthansa claims is the the world's quietest First Class cabin.

In the cabin, overhead bins were omitted in order to provide more headroom. Instead, each passenger has an individual lockable closet and instead of just a washroom with a lavatory, first class passengers have a luxurious bathroom with wash and changing areas separated from the lavatory area.

After displaying at ILA on Tuesday the A380 will be prepared to begin scheduled service on Friday when it begins routes to Beijing and Johannesburg.

Aerospace group EADS will have a key showcase at the opening of the Berlin Air Show as it parades its A400M military transporter and announces a massive new sale for its flagship Airbus A380.

But even as German leaders prepared to open the show on Tuesday, the rest of the airline industry was readying a stiff response to the government's new plan for a tax on passengers.

One of the industry's chief economists has called the tax "a revenue-raising exercise... in environmental clothes".

The Berlin show is a biennial event that tends to be overshadowed by larger shows elsewhere, but Airbus will use it as a platform to show it can finish and sell the A400M, the massive plane on which it has bet much of its future.

It will also be a venue for news on the A380 passenger model. Berlin Air Show officials said Airbus will sign a contract for new orders with Dubai's Emirates on Tuesday afternoon, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel present.

Aviation sources in Berlin said the order would be for at least 30 planes. At a list price of USD$346 million per plane, the blockbuster deal could be worth more than USD$10 billion.

FLAGSHIP COMPANY

Emirates, the Arab world's largest carrier, became Dubai's flagship company and one of the biggest contributors to the local economy after the property crisis devastated real estate firms. The government-owned group expects to earn USD$1.16 billion in 2010.

The carrier, which started in 1985 with two planes, has grown to rival airlines such as Qantas and Singapore Airlines for passenger traffic between Europe and east Asia.

The A400M, which has cost EADS billions of dollars in cost overrun charges, will also be at the show. EADS said last week the two planes in testing were working well and two more test planes should go into service this year.

Airbus chief Tom Enders told an industry dinner packed with airline CEOs on Monday night he would gladly sell any of them an A400M -- drawing laughs but no obvious takers.

Instead, most at the dinner spent the evening discussing Germany's air travel tax proposal, announced on Monday afternoon during the International Air Transport Association's annual meeting in Berlin.

The tax would raise up to EUR€1 billion (USD$1.3 billion) a year with a levy on domestic departures.

Enders remarked that Merkel "had impeccable timing" with the announcement, coinciding as it did with IATA's meeting on her home turf. The airline body said on Tuesday it was preparing a fuller response to the tax, which it is expected to present later on Tuesday as its AGM wraps up.

But IATA chief economist Brian Pearce underlined the industry's expected position in a press briefing. "The last thing the industry needs here in Europe is additional taxation," he said.
