Iberia's March passenger traffic fell 3.2 percent on the year, the Spanish airline said on Tuesday, as low cost competitors continued to erode its market share in Spain and the rest of Europe.

Faced with continued falling demand for its flights, Iberia cut capacity by 6.8 percent in March, which helped its load factor to rise 3 percentage points to 81.7 percent.

Merger partner British Airways carried 11.4 percent fewer passengers in March year-on-year, hit by seven days of strikes, but said underlying air traffic demand continued to recover from the worst industry downturn in decades.

Industry body IATA said on March 30 that airlines were climbing out of recession with passenger travel growing strongly since the turn of the year.
