(ANSA) - Pisa, November 23 - A C-130 military transport plane which crashed outside Pisa airport Monday afternoon was carrying out a 'touch-and-go' exercise when the pilot apparently lost control of the aircraft, air force sources said.
The exercise involves a plane landing and then immediately taking off, the sources explained, adding that it was still too early to determine what might have gone wrong.
The five aboard the plane were said to be three "experienced" pilots and two airmen assigned to the cargo area.
The air force has opened an official probe into the crash.
Pisa airport, which is used by both the military and civilian airlines, was closed for several hours after the crash and part of the plane's fuselage fell on tracks along the local Pisa-Livorno line interrupting rail service.
Defense Minister Ignazio La Russa has sent a message of condolence to the families of the five victims.
