SANTA MONICA -- Two people are dead after a single engine plane crashed at Santa Monica airport. according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The plane crashed at the west end of the runway and burst into flames around 5:05 Wednesday evening, according to Santa Monica Lt. Ken Semko.

Witnesses say the plane took off from the airport, encountered some sort of a mechanical problem, and tried to return, but crashed.

Reports from the scene indicate the plane may have encountered engine failure and crashed, nose first, into the runway.

Both occupants in the single engine plane are dead. No one on the ground was hurt.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the plane was a Marchetti F260. The Marchetti is an acrobatic plane.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.

The airport is now closed for landings and departures.

It is with the deepest sorrow that we let know Paulo Emanuele, General Manager of Airliners.net died this evening in a tragic plane crash. His plane took off out of Santa Monica Airport around 5:00 PM and lost power. Paulo attempted to return to the airport, but did not make it. Paulo loved Airliners and everything it stands for.

He will be remembered for his passion, his kindness, and his love for life.

Paulo was an amazing pilot, an amazing photographer, an amazing friend, and an amazing father. He will be deeply missed.

Thank you Paulo for the time we had with you...We know you will be smiling down on us.
