MOSCOW — Russia's Emergencies Ministry says a passenger plane has crashed near a city in northern Siberia, killing 15 people aboard.

Ministry spokeswoman Irina Andryanova says the Antonov-24 twin turboprop plane went down Monday on approach to the airport in the town of Igarka.

Igarka is in the sprawling Siberian region of Krasnoyarsk, some 2,500 kilometers (1500 miles) east of Moscow.

Andryanova says the plane was on its way from the regional capital, also called Krasnoyarsk. It was not immediately clear which airline was running the plane.

The An-24 has a capacity of about 45 people.

Numarul persoanelor care si-au pierdut viata in urma prabusirii avionului An-24, in apropiere de orasul Igarka (Siberia) a ajuns la 12. Unul dintre raniti a decedat, marti dimineata - a anuntat o sursa oficiala, citata de France Presse. Exista, de asemenea, 3 membri ai echipajului care au supravietuit catastrofei. Acestia raman in continuare, in spital.

Purtatorul de cuvant al Ministerului rus pentru Situatii de Urgenta a declarat ca aparatul apartinea companiei Katekavia si efectua o cursa intre Krasnoiarsk si Igarka. Avionul s-a prabusit la 700 m de pista, in timp ce se pregatea sa aterizeze. O insotitoare de zbor si zece pasageri, intre care si un copil, au murit pe loc. Potrivit anchetatorilor, la originea accidentului ar putea fi ceata densa.

Russian investigators have opened an inquiry into the accident involving a Katekavia Antonov An-24 which crashed on landing at the northern city of Igarka.

The aircraft came down yesterday in darkness at 01:19.

Katekavia's schedule shows that it operates a regular service, KYU57, to Igarka from Krasnoyarsk.

Russia's Interstate Aviation Committee (MAK) has identified the twin-turboprop as bearing registration RA-46524
Meteorological data from Igarka around the time of the accident shows declining visibility and rain showers, with overcast cloud and cumulonimbus activity.

Several fatalities are reported from among 11 passengers and four crew members on board the aircraft, which is said to have come down short of the runway.

Igarka has a single runway designated 12/30.

Katekavia says it operates around a dozen An-24s, configured with 48 seats, but in the last couple of weeks has taken delivery of a Tupolev Tu-134A.

Russian investigators have discovered that the information cockpit-voice recorder from the crashed Katekavia Antonov An-24 contains incomplete information about the accident.

The Interstate Aviation Committee (MAK) says the recording only features the crew conversations for the first 80min of the fatal flight.

MAK says, however, that the flight-data recorder has data from the last 90min.

All 11 passengers, plus the flight attendant, were killed after the aircraft came down on approach to Igarka, in northern Russia, on 2 August. Only the flight crew - two pilots and an engineer - survived.

Federal air transport regulator Rosaviatsia says the aircraft, which had been arriving from Krasnoyarsk Cheremshanka Airport, had been attempting to land at night, in rain, with visibility of 3,500m.

It says the approach was being conducted using outer and inner NDB navigational aids.

But it states that, as the An-24 prepared to land, it "deviated to the right of the approach path", struck the ground, broke up and caught fire.

Rosaviatsia says the aircraft's commander was highly experienced, with 15,800hr on An-24s, while the co-pilot had 2,860hr on type.

It adds that the 36-year old aircraft had last undergone scheduled maintenance in May this year, although it had a line check on the day of the accident.
