- No Injuries Reported After Wing Of Airbus, Hits Smaller Jet's Tail
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Two planes collided Wednesday evening at Newark Liberty International Airport.
Shortly before 7:30 p.m., Scandinavian Airlines 908, an Airbus A330; and ExpressJet 4226, an Embraer E145 aircraft, made contact while both aircraft were taxiing for departure, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
As CBS 2’s Hazel Sanchez reported, the damage was visible from Chopper 2 HD. The tail on one of the aircraft was left crumpled.
None of the 31 passengers aboard the ExpressJet plane were injured, the airline said.
The SAS Airbus, positioned behind the ExpressJet, was attempting to turn right onto a taxiway when its wing clipped the tail of the smaller plane, the FAA said.
The ExpressJet plane, which was headed to Nashville, Tenn., was towed back to the gate, while the SAS plane, destined for Oslo, Norway, taxied to the gate, the FAA said.
“ExpressJet Flight 4226, operating as United Express, from Newark (EWR) to Nashville (BNA) was on the taxiway in EWR when its tail was contacted by another aircraft. All 31 passengers deplaned the aircraft normally and were bussed to the terminal where they are being re-accommodated. ExpressJet is working in coordination with officials to determine the cause,” ExpressJet said in a statement.
As of about 9 p.m., the FAA was reporting a gate hold and taxi delays between 15 and 29 minutes. Flights were back to normal by 10:35 p.m. Video : http://newyork.cbslocal.com/video?autoStart=true&topVideoCatNo=default&clipId=8833483 | |
