The helicopters spotted what they believe is the plane on the side of a cliff on Mount Salak in West Java province, Maj. Ali Umri Lubis, of Atang Sanjaya Air base in Bogor, told MetroTV. He said it was at an elevation of about 1,500 meters (5,000 feet) but had no further details.

Three helicopters and over 600 rescuers resumed their search operation around Salak Mountain, in Java's west, on Thursday morning. Before that, Indonesian authorities expressed hope for the plane had taken an emergency landing.

Still, the capital's Emergency Agency chief, Ketut Parwa, admits that if there had been an emergency landing some news via the radio or phone calls should have made their way in by now.

"We fear [the plane] might have crashed in a jungle area some 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) above sea level near [crater] Kawah Ratu," Parwa added. The crater is on Salak's northern slope.

Three rescue posts have been set up around Salak Mountain. Over 600 police officers and volunteers are combing the area, where the radio connection with the jet crew was lost.

The search efforts are be boosted by helicopters from the Air Forces and Emergencies Agency and a medical chopper. Thursday met the rescue mission with dense clouds, fog and rain, which repeatedly delayed takeoff.

The 48 people onboard include Indonesian businessmen, Russian embassy officials and journalists. An American and a French nationals have been confirmed to board the plane. Earlier reports suggested the plane took off with 50 people, but then it proved two Indonesian men had decided to skip the demonstration flight.

On Wednesday night, relatives of the missing passengers streamed to Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport in Jakarta, many breaking down in tears.

Russia's first all-new passenger jet since the fall of the Soviet Union disappeared from radar screens south of the capital Jakarta on Wednesday, 50 minutes into what was meant to be a brief demonstration flight. The vehicle was taking part in an international air show in Indonesia and was lost at about 0800 GMT after it descended to 6,000 feet around Salak, a volcano 7,254 feet above sea level, officials said.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has ordered a special commission comprising members of the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Industry and the airplane manufacturer to investigate the incident. Indonesia President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is expected to head the rescue mission later in the day.

Ieri s-au gasit cutiile negre, azi de abia se vor putea extrage din zona accidentului.

Se pare ca pilotul a cerut si obtinut permisiunea de a cobora de la 10000 picioare la 6000 (1800 m) in conditiile in care varfurile muntelui Salak, din apropiere, sunt mai inalte de 2200 m.
