- Fighter Jet 'Shot Down' Over Benghazi
A fighter jet has crashed in flames after apparently being shot down over the rebel stronghold of Benghazi in eastern Libya, reports the BBC's Ian Pannell in the city.
He reports seeing the jet plummet to the ground around 0900 (0700 GMT), but said it was unclear exactly what brought the plane down.
Explosions and gunfire have been heard across Benghazi despite Col Gaddafi's government declaring a ceasefire on Friday.
Meanwhile, leaders from the US, the UK, France, and Arab countries are to meet in Paris to discuss military action in Libya.
The summit comes after the UN Security Council approved a resolution that allows "all necessary measures", short of an invasion, to protect civilians in the north African country.

- LIBYA UPRISING: Missiles And Planes Strike Libya
The UK, US and France have attacked Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi's forces in the first action to enforce a UN-mandated no-fly zone. Pentagon officials say the US and the UK have fired more than 110 missiles, while French planes struck pro-Gaddafi forces attacking rebel-held Benghazi.
Col Gaddafi has vowed retaliation and said he would open arms depots to the people to defend Libya.
Cruise missiles hit air-defence sites in the capital, Tripoli, and Misrata.
Libyan state TV broadcast footage it says showed some of the 150 people wounded in the attacks. It said 48 people had been killed. There was no independent confirmation of the deaths.
Military officials are said to be assessing the damage from the overnight raids before deciding on their next move.
At least 14 bodies were lying in and around the remains of military vehicles which littered the road leading to Benghazi after the French strikes, Reuters reports.
Rebel forces are now heading from Benghazi to the town of Ajdabiya, which has been the scene of fierce fighting in recent days, the agency says.
Hundreds of Col Gaddafi's supporters have gathered at his Bab al-Aziziyah palace and the international airport to serve as human shields, state TV said.
The AFP news agency reports that bombs were dropped near the palace, which the US also attacked in 1986.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, heavy bursts of anti-aircraft fire arced into the sky above Tripoli and several explosions were heard.
Sources in Tripoli told BBC Arabic that the attacks on the city had so far targeted the eastern areas of Sawani, Airport Road, and Ghasheer. These are all areas believed to host military bases.
The Western forces began their action on Saturday, after Libyan government forces attacked the main rebel-held city of Benghazi - Col Gaddafi's allies accused the rebels of breaking the ceasefire:
A French plane fired the first shots against Libyan government targets at 1645 GMT on Saturday, destroying military vehicles near Benghazi, according to a military spokesman At least 110 Tomahawk cruise missiles were fired from US destroyers and submarine, said a Pentagon official A British submarine and Tornado jets fired missiles at Libyan military targets, the UK Ministry of Defence said There were also strikes near the western city of Misrata France has denied Libyan claims to have shot down a French plane A naval blockade against Libya is being put in place. "It's a first phase of a multi-phase operation" to enforce the UN resolution, said US Navy Vice-Adm William E Gortney.
The BBC's Kevin Connolly, in the rebel-held eastern city of Tobruk, says that once the air-defence systems are taken out, combat aircraft can patrol Libyan airspace more widely and it will then become clear to what extent they will attack Col Gaddafi's ground forces. This will determine the outcome of the campaign, he adds.
Russia and China, which abstained from the UN Security Council resolution approving the use of force in Libya, have urged all parties to stop fighting, as has the African Union.
After the missile bombardment and the air strikes, Col Gaddafi made a brief speech calling on people to resist.
"Civilian and military targets in the air and sea will be liable to serious danger in the Mediterranean," he said.
The Libyan leader called the attacks "a colonialist crusade of aggression. This can lead to open a new crusade war."
Our correspondent says it is now clear that Col Gaddafi's strategy is to portray the attacks as an act of colonialist aggression and rally enough of the Libyan people behind him to maintain his grip on power.
'Legal and right'
US President Barack Obama, speaking during a visit to Brazil, said the US was taking "limited military action" as part of a "broad coalition".
"We cannot stand idly by when a tyrant tells his people there will be no mercy," he said.
He repeated that no US ground troops would take part.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron said that launching military action against Libya was "necessary, legal and right".
The international community was intervening to stop the "murderous madness" of Col Gaddafi, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said.
"In Libya, the civilian population, which is demanding nothing more than the right to choose their own destiny, is in mortal danger," he warned. "It is our duty to respond to their anguished appeal."
Canada is also sending warplanes to the region, while Italy has offered the use of its military bases.
Rebels in Benghazi said thousands of people had fled the attack by Col Gaddafi's forces, heading east, and the UN refugee agency said it was preparing to receive 200,000 refugees from Libya.
Col Gaddafi has ruled Libya for more than 40 years. An uprising against him began last month after the long-time leaders of neighbouring Tunisia and Egypt were toppled.

- U.S. F-15 crashes in Libya, crew ejects
A U.S. Air Force F-15E fighter jet crashed overnight over rebel-held Libya, but its crew was reported to be safe after ejecting, Reuters reports:
Libyan rebels rescued the pilot after he ejected from the warplane which came down near the eastern city of Benghazi, Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its website.
Another spokesman for the Stuttgart-based Africa Command said later that the second crewman had also been safely rescued, and that both crewmembers had suffered only minor injuries after ejecting from the aircraft.
The crash was likely caused by mechanical failure and not hostile fire, Crawley added.
The Telegraph web site showed local Libyans inspecting the charred wreckage of the plane.

- THE END OF GADDAFI'S RULE IN LIBYA: Libyan Rebels Use UAV To Locate Gaddafi Forces
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - September 1, 2011: Rebel forces in Libya making the final push to end the regime of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi have been making use of modern UAV technology.
According to the US-based AUVSI, the rebels have been using Canadian technology to help them know where to shoot as they surrounded Gadaffi’s compound and hometown stronghold.
The Aeryon Scout Micro UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) – a 1.3kg backpack-sized drone - was chosen by the Transitional National Council to acquire intelligence on Gaddafi’s forces’ positions to help coordinate attacks. The TNC was working alongside Ottawa’s Zariba Security.
“The system has been operating perfectly, with no incidents – quite impressive for those familiar with the statistics of other small UAVs in operational theatres,” said Charles Barlow, Zariba’s director of field support. “Soldiers need tough, intuitive equipment – and the Scout delivered brilliantly.”
According to a release from Zariba, Barlow took an 18-hour boat ride from Malta to reach the TNC training facility at the Misrata Airport where he required only 36 hours to bring the rebel soldiers up to speed.
“After only one demonstration flight, the TNC soldiers operated the following flight,” he said.
“I was amazed how easy it was to train people with no previous UAV or aircraft experience, especially given the language barrier.
The Scout was designed specifically for desert operations, capable of operating in temperatures up to +50C and in sandy or wet conditions. Its vertical takeoff and landing capability, combined with both an optical camera for daytime use and a thermal imaging system for nighttime observation, makes the lightweight spy-copter particularly versatile.
Depending on feature sets, the Scout ranges in price from $100,000 and $200,000, and according to Zariba, it has previously been used in a major drug sting in South America and is currently being considered for use by other Middle Eastern countries.

| Titlu: EU lifts sanctions against Libyan Airlines Sursa: flightglobal.com Autor: David Kaminski-Morrow Data: 05.09.2011 - Citat :
- European sanctions against Libyan Airlines have been lifted following the political developments in the North African state.
The European Union placed sanctions on Libya in a regulation dated 2 March, gradually extending the restrictions to various entities.
It included Libyan Airlines in the list on 12 April, citing the fact that it was wholly-owned by the Libyan government.
Afriqiyah Airways, the Libyan state's other main airline, was separately listed on 23 May. The sanction document stated that it was owned by the Libyan African Investment Portfolio, an entity "owned and controlled by the regime".
But in the wake of the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi from his seat of power in Tripoli, and the efforts to change the government in Libya, the EU has eased some of its prohibitions, lifting restrictions on 28 organisations including various oil companies, port authorities and banks.
Libyan Airlines is also included on the list, which featured in an implementing regulation in the EU's Official Journal on 1 September.
Afriqiyah Airways, which operated official flights for Gaddafi, is not specifically listed as having had restrictions lifted, although the reason is unclear. The two carriers had been in the process of merging before the unrest broke out in Libya earlier this year.
