Preserved aircraft in Bucharest Empty
MesajSubiect: Preserved aircraft in Bucharest   Preserved aircraft in Bucharest EmptySam 18 Sept 2010, 20:06

Can anyone help identify a twin (Antonov?) displayed at the entrance to Otopeni Airport? Never seen it but it is clear on Google Earth at 44°34'13.24"N, 26° 4'19.33"E.

Also, between Baneasa and Otopeni is a military base next to the road. 44°31'10.96"N, 26° 4'28.25"E. There seems to be a MiG-21 on display visible from the road (drove past in a taxi last week), but Google Earth seems to show at least three other aircraft on display. Anyone have any info?

Also there are at least two An-2's, one is YR-PBV, displayed in Bucharest. Can anyone provide exact locations?

Thanks for any help,

Steve Darke

The one in front of OTP is on the old location of the Aviation Museum, now on Strada Fabrica de Glucoza. I presume it was left there when the Museum moved. It's definitely locked up, though once I came across a guard at the entrance who might let you in after some good arguing.

I knew about the military base between BBU and OTP but had no idea it also had a helipad and aircraft in display. I passed by the place hundreds of times and didn't glimpse anything. Interesting. I'd doubt the military will let you in, let alone with a camera hung round your neck.

There is an An-2 on Colentina, no longer wearing its rego, at 44° 28' 07" 26° 08' 37". I'm sure you can find photos of it on this forum, in the An-2 thread.

LE: sergiu, gresesti. E o alta baza chiar langa DN1.

No, that is south of Baneasa at 44°28'39.97"N, 26° 6'38.17"E. The one I saw is a small base north of Baneasa, about 5.5km south of Otopeni, on the west side of the main highway.

Thanks for the note about the base. I've been past several times too, but only noticed the MiG last week!

Also thanks for the location of the An-2.

The aircraft left over at OTP from the Museum looks like an Il-28?

44°34'13.24"N, 26° 4'19.33"E
This aircraft is an IL-28R that belongs to the Romanian Air Force Museum (now housed at Str. Fabrica de Glucoza). The aircraft could not be moved to the new location because of its size and wingspan and is still awaiting transport

44°31'10.96"N, 26° 4'28.25"E
This is the location of the General Staff of the Air Force. Displayed inside the courtyard are a MiG-21MF-75 LanceR C (on a pole), an IAR-93A Preseries 1 (tactical number 114, also on a pole) and an IAR-316B Alouette III

One An-2 displayed in Bucharest is here 44°31'10.96"N, 26° 4'28.25"E

Thanks very much. The co-ordinates for the An-2 you mention are the same as the General Staff 'museum'. I suspect a typo??

Thy suspicion is correct. The correct coordinates are: 44°28'07.32"N, 26°08'37.78"E

The MiG-21 at the AF HQ is apparently MiG-21M '710'
