A spokesman for the Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) pilots union said on Tuesday it had not dropped its strike call as demanded by the airline, which is keen to head off a walkout that could cost it tens of millions of euros.

Lufthansa personnel chief Stefan Lauer has threatened to take the union to court and seek damages unless it quickly cancels the planned strike, which is due to start on April 13.

A short pilots' strike in February had cost the airline around EUR€48 million euros (USD$64.7 million), Lufthansa has said.

"We have agreed on key points for arbitration talks," a spokeswoman for Lufthansa said late on Wednesday.

The Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) pilots union said in a statement that both parties would appoint a mediator within the next couple of days.

Lufthansa last week proposed arbitration and threatened to claim damages from the pilots' union if it failed to swiftly call off the walkout.

But the pilots had refused to call off the strike until the terms of mediation were clear. Lufthansa responded by saying it would not discuss terms until the walkout planned for April 13-16 had been cancelled.

The pilots already staged a day-long strike in February that led to about 2,000 flight cancellations, stranded thousands of travellers around the world and cost Lufthansa about EUR€48 million euros (USD$64.74 million) in lost revenues.

The row comes amid mounting labour unrest over management attempts to push through cost cuts in an industry still reeling after its worst year in decades, when consumers and companies reined in travel budgets amid the global economic crisis.

Seven days of strike at British Airways hit that airline's passenger numbers in March and could cost the carrier nearly USD$70 million, it said on Wednesday.
